History


2025
WAVCA engage the United Nations and The Future of Roads Minister to represent the needs of people with disabilities in topics such as Cybersecurity and infrastructure planning.

2024
Further stakeholder engagements with DVLA, VCA, and Motability Operations, continues to shape future WAV legislation including Type Approval and ISO 10542.

2023
WAVZETMG, the WAV Zero emission transition monitoring group is formed. WAVCA are invited to present to the Department for Transport and Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, to discuss the impact of the electric vehicle transition and the periodic PAS 2012 Revision process launched with our partners BSI


2022
Negotiations with the EU Commission begin to develop the requirements of GSR2 for WAVs. Further updates to the safety and environmental performance of WAVs are sought. WAVCA engage with regulatory and industry stakeholders to determine the best course of action to deliver ‘e-WAVs’  based on electric vehicles, in preparation for the phase-out of combustion-engined cars.



2019
Updated WAV standards PAS 2012-2019 Part 1 and 2 are agreed and published.

2015
Updated WAV standards PAS 2012-2015 Part 1 and 2 are agreed and published.

2013
WAVCA becomes a Limited Company with a Board of Directors.
WAVCA continues to work with European Commission in the development of legislation for WAVs. 
WAVCA develops a European trade association for WAVs –  Organisation Européenne des Constructeurs de Véhicules Accessibles OECVA

2012
European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) legislation becomes mandatory for WAVs.
PAS 2012:2012 Parts 1 &2 is officially published.
Motability adopts PAS 2012:12 as their Accreditation Scheme for WAVs.

2009 – 2011
WAVCA collaborates with BSi to develop PAS 2012, a new Standard for WAVs, and offer a new-style accreditation system for Motability and other consumers.

2007 – 2008
WAVCA lobbies the European Commission, as a result European legislation is amended to include WAVs as Special Purpose Vehicles alongside Ambulances.

2005
The UK WAV industry is threatened by European legislation which would reduce the number of vehicles allowed under UK National Low Volume Type Approval from 500 to 75 of any Type.

1999
The WAVCA Code of Practice published.

1993 
The first WAVs are supplied on the Motability Contract Hire Scheme.

1989
The first WAVs are supplied on the Motability scheme.
